Margot Robbie still 'involved' with Pirates of the Caribbean reboot

Margot Robbie is still "involved" in a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.

The Barbie actress was linked with a rumoured refresh of the Disney franchise in 2020 but later suggested the project had been dropped, however producer Jerry Bruckheimer - who worked on the first five movies in the series - has confirmed there is a script in the works for a new film and there is still a role for the Australian star.

He told The Wrap: “We’re working on a script. It’s always on the page; if we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.

“We had two scripts at one point, and then one kinda dropped out, and then we kinda went on with the other one.”

Asked if the project starring Margot was the one that dropped out, he replied: “Well, she’s still involved.”

Jerry also revealed Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four movies in the series, had been involved with the new script.

Margot suggested in 2022 that the "really cool" Pirates of the Caribbean movie she had been attached to had been dropped.

She told Vanity Fair magazine: "We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led - not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story - which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it."

The Pirates of the Caribbean series ran from 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl to 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, and starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.

However, the franchise was put on ice and the lead actor was dropped in December 2018 after his ex-wife Amber Heard claimed she was the victim of domestic violence in an op-ed for the Washington Post.

The Edward Scissorhands star has since been cleared of Heard’s allegations in court.

It was claimed in December 2024 that the studio was considering bringing Depp back for a sixth movie and earlier this year, Jerry admitted he thought

Johnny would return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise “if he likes the way the part’s written”.

The producer told Entertainment Weekly: “I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know … We are still working on a screenplay.

“We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”

Pirates of the Caribbean also starred Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann from 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl to 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest.

Recently, Orlando said he wanted to return to Pirates of the Caribbean alongside the original cast.

Speaking at Fan Expo Chicago, he said: “Everything is in the writing, right? Everything is on the page, and I think there’s definitely, I’m sure there’s a way to create something.

“I would personally love to see everybody back. I think the way to win on that one is to get everybody back. If they can, and if everybody wanted to go back.

“My thing is, if the script was great and - ideally it was everybody — it’d be kind of like in for a penny, in for a pound, you know.”

However, Keira has since insisted “there haven't been any conversations” with the original cast about potentially returning for a sixth film.
