Tyrese Gibson to star in Don't Open the Door
Tyrese Gibson is to star in horror thriller Don't Open the Door.
The 46-year-old actor is set to reteam with director Deon Taylor - who he previously worked with on 2019's action movie Black and Blue - on the movie, and while plot details are being kept under wraps, the film will also launch a graphic-novel inspired universe to take the story beyond the big screen.
Tyrese told Deadline in a statement: “I don’t just trust Deon with my performance, I trust him with my legacy. Black and Blue was the beginning of something real between us. Now, with Don’t Open the Door, we’re stepping into a story that’s even more personal, something layered, and rooted in purpose.”
And the House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2 filmmaker is excited about the "twisted" new world they are building with Don't Open the Door.
He said: “Collaborating again with Tyrese is like dropping a match in gasoline. We lit a spark with Black and Blue, and this time we’re bringing that same energy to a whole new world that is twisted, elevated, and unapologetically ours. There’s nothing like building something this ambitious with someone who shares your vision and your drive.”
Don't Open the Door is set to enter production in Los Angeles later this year.
Fast and Furious star Tyrese previously claimed he had lost out on a number of roles to his Four Brothers co-star Terrence Howard because the Empire actor is "lighter-skinned".
He said on Leah's Lemonade: “Throughout my whole childhood, it was not cool to be dark-skinned in the hood. It was always light-skinned Black people who seemed to get all the attention, all the love, and were considered pretty or handsome.
“Since I’ve been in Hollywood, we’ve dealt with the same thing.
“I just did a film with Terrence Howard, and you know we’re able to joke about it now, [but] I was the star of a film. They had an idea to go with someone I won’t mention, and I suggested Terrence Howard.
“And he thanked me for like a week straight…he was thanking me for booking him. And I was thinking to myself, Terrence Howard has no idea how many roles that I was about to book, and they went with him because he’s the lighter-skinned Black man with green eyes.”
