Sigourney Weaver's reason why a sequel to Heartbreakers would not work

Sigourney Weaver would not feel right doing a sequel to Heartbreakers.

The 76-year-old actress thinks a follow-up does not work without Gene Hackman (William B. Tensy), Ray Liotta (Dean Cumanno) and Anne Bancroft (Barbara, Gloria Vogal), who have all died since the 2001 romcom film's release.

Weaver told E! News: It's such a great story - it’s one of my favourite movies. I can't imagine not having our original team together."

Heartbreakers - Bancroft's final film before her death from uterine cancer in June 2005 at the age of 73 - follows Angela Nardino (Weaver) and Page Conners (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a mom and daughter duo who team up to seduce and scam rich men to pay off the IRS.

Love Hewitt, 47, declared the film as "one of the most incredible moments in my life!", and Weaver - who was nominated for a Satellite Award for her performance of Angela - said she is "so glad Jennifer remembers it with as much affection as I do".

Weaver added: "I'm very proud of it."

The Hollywood legend's Tomb Raider co-star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, 40, is a big fan of Heartbreakers - which grossed over $57 million at the worldwide box office.

Weaver said: "The movie of mine she loves the most is Heartbreakers."

In 2022, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Weaver said she had "such a good time" working with her Heartbreakers co-star Liotta, who died from acute heart failure and respiratory issues in May 2022 at the age of 67.

Weaver told People: "Ray was loaded with charm and physical ease, Ray was a natural in comedy and just a doll to work with. We had such a good time."

The Alien legend added that Liotta may not have been known for his "comic chops", he still brought "impeccable timing" to his role as small-time crook Dean.

She said: "Ray may not be known primarily for his comic chops. He brought impeccable timing and wit to everything he did. A true original and a lovely guy. Gone much too soon."

On February 26, 2025, two-time Oscar winner Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe home by maintenance workers.

According to the Santa Fe medical examiner, Betsy died first after contracting hantavirus, a respiratory illness linked to rodents.

Betsy was last seen alive on February 11, 2025, at a CVS store in Santa Fe, and last contacted a doctor on February 12 when she phoned complaining of respiratory problems.

The medical examiner said Betsy died later that same day.

Gene, who had Alzheimer’s disease, remained in the home for about a week after Betsy’s death, apparently unable to understand what had happened, before dying on February 18.

The couple were buried beside each other beneath a tree the following month in a private ceremony at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens.

Gene and Betsy's joint resting place is marked only by a conch.
